We left Visalia and traveled west along Rt. 41 through the San Joaquin Valley - the fruit and vegetable capital of the US. It was flat and hot. Eventually we came to Sunflower Valley and began our ascent over the coastal mountains before descending into Atascadero where it was HOT. After driving our last 30 miles we descended, and I mean descended, into San Luis Obispo (SLO) where is was sunny and mild (about 80 degrees).
We met with up Doug's sister, Tina, and drove into downtown SLO. We had an early dinner creekside at NOVO and the food was fabulous. I had a baby greens salad with figs, toasted hazlenuts, apples and fresh goat cheese topped off with a light orange vinagrette...WOW!!! I could eat this everyday.
It was farmer's market night. Now this is a sight that all should behold. Not only is the street filled with tent after tent of photograph worthy produce/flowers and almost any type of food vendor that one could imagine but there was music on every corner. There was an eccentric looking gentleman in a kilt playing an electric standup bass, an orchestra made up mostly of retired people playing New Orleans-style music and as assortment of other entertainers. These people know how to stage a farmer's market.
On most trips there is nary a photo of Doug and I together. There can be no doubt that we were travelling together on this epic adventure!
This was the opening night for the festival. The event was held at the new performing arts center at Cuesta College in SLO. The venture was beautiful. This evening's theme was "Four Hands On" featuring Hung-Kuan Chen and Tema Blackstone as the pianists. The composers were Rachmanioff and Lutoslawski. What a lovely evening.
